Being Born From Above

This meditation is based on a passage for March 16, 2011 in the Daily Lectionary Year 1 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).

Text: John 2:23-3:15

Reflection and Question: Nicodemus is an acknowledged leader of the Jews while Jesus is an itinerant preacher. Yet, the powerful man goes to Jesus to engage in learned conversation. Their exchange continues to challenge us to this very day. What does Jesus mean when He says, “No one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” (Or as we tend to say, “again.”) In response to Nicodemus, Jesus clarifies that we need to be born of the Spirit that is like the wind that blows where it chooses. Nicodemus is still mystified. Can we do any better than Nicodemus — how are you born again?

Prayer: Dearest Jesus, we have been born of water in our baptism. We also yearn to be born of Your Spirit so that we may be free as the wind. Give us the courage of Nicodemus so that we ask the questions in our hearts. Then answer us truly. Amen.
